Professional Development

I completed an online course on learning disabilities which assisted me in becoming a better teacher. It helped with my instruction in my classroom. It helped me to see that instruction can be adapted to accommodate the needs of students with learning disabilities such as dyslexia or other learning problems. It also showed me strategies can be used to modify instruction in most subject areas to improve students' comprehension of tasks and the quality of their work. It also showed me that I need to focus on my students’ strengths and not their weaknesses. Bringing those “superpowers” to the forefront of the discussion is a tool for encouraging those with learning disabilities and helping other children appreciate their classmates’ unique talents, as well. Having a strength-based lens and a few scripts ready can make a big difference in how the students we interact with see themselves as learners. This was useful in my practice whereby the differently abled did not feel stigmatised but included.

great!

We all need to take these type of courses, especially if we are used to teaching at elitist schools. Disabilities are not all visible, so it's important that as teachers we are able to identify and help students who we know  may need our help.
