Two key features of an inclusive school to me are acceptance and
support within the school environment. A family came to be enrolled at one of
the ECCE Centres and the father was unable to read and write. Added to that,
the child's mother had a physical disability as well as communication problem.
The teacher seeing this supported the parents by going through the forms with them,
by reading and explaining as well as writing down their responses.
When the child came into
the Centre that support did not stop there, all staff members continued to
support the family by reading and explaining all correspondences before
giving them, they will stand by the sign in table and assist in signing in and
out the child by helping identify the child's name for him to write his own the
best way he could.
At the end the family felt
a part of the Centre because we accepted them as parents despite their
disability and they were not left to figure things on their own but were
supported. We did not only support the parents but also the child because the
child also had a disability.
