Summary on School Policies to Support Inclusive Education

Thank you everyone for your contributions on this issue. The following were your contributions on what should be included in a school policy to support inclusive education.

  1. Extra curriculum activities for ALL students during school hours. Examples; social clubs, sports, writing and dancing clubs etc.
  2. School to involve both parents and the community through meetings, random school visits, open days, workshops, seminars etc
  3. A well structured support system for learners with disabilities from their peers through pairing and grouping them with those without disabilities. (Peer or buddy support system)
  4. Differentiated activities for inclusivity.
  5. Facilities that support all learners.
  6. An environments that is welcoming to all learners
  7. Checklists of tasks to be given to learners with special needs
  8. Increased time allocations for learners with special need for completion of tasks.
  9. Parents support groups to be developed.
  10. Teacher professional development in inclusive education.

Thank you for the summary Florence. What school management boards and administrators need to invest in urgently is Teacher professional development in inclusive education as most teachers are not aware that they have a role to play in inclusive education.

Teacher professional development is indeed a key factor. I am of the opinion that teachers should also seek out these opportunities and should always look to develop themselves . Teaching means constantly learning and thus a teacher must be very teachable.

I agree teacher's development is indeed a key factor in inclusive education and ensuring that it is progressive. Teachers are in the place of imparting knowledge. There is need to keep abreast and know what to confidently impart. Everyday there are new discoveries  that can help students ,their parents etc.

Don't forget, many people still consult teachers for advice, especially parents when they want to know about their how best to support their children's development.

Thanks Florence for your summary on policies to support inclusive education. It all make sense for the schools to inclusively support all learners and that professional development for teachers are held constantly to help with the day to day running of the school along with all students.
