1.4 Developing positive attitudes

I worked with a child with speech delay. The child parents would not accept the fact that the child had this problem. At times the child would I would  point to what she wanted or needed. In order to overcome this issue I encouraged the child to use her words to communicate her needs and wants by saying the word and have her repeat it.

Sometimes we as teachers need to overcome not just major issue - the child who's presenting the problem but the underlying issue- the parents inability to accept the child's problem. Both require teachers to display a double dose or a triple dose of positivity to assist the child. Great that you persevered and assisted the child!

Hi Kristal,

Teachers must have positive attitudes and a willingness to reach each child where they are and help to move them towards their full potential. An understanding of the child and their background/ culture is of vital importance in helping the child. Research, a plan of intervention/ strategies, assistance from colleagues and parents are also important in ensuring that the child's needs are met.

Good Job

If a teacher cannot be positive in the classroom then he/she is failing. Even with children without special need to feel that positivity.
