An inclusive school is a school that builds a culture where learners with different abilities, disabilities, and challenges are welcomed, their diversities are celebrated and they are provided with a good quality education. It is the measure to which all learners have a voice; they are valued, respected, and able to freely participate. In simple words it is a school for everyone.
Two important features of an inclusive school are as follows -
Staff development - The staff at an inclusive school engages in continuous professional development. They are trained in various teaching strategies, teaching aids, device and assessment techniques to cater to the needs of their diverse learners. Through these in service programmes the teachers are able to update themselves with new developments that are taking place in the field of inclusive education.
Variety of resources - In an inclusive school resources are available throughout the school and not just in specialised places in the school or in a particular classroom. For instance, ramps are built all over the premises so children in wheelchairs can move around easily and a variety of resources are provided, both human and otherwise based on the needs of the children.
I think that inclusion is not only good for children with special needs but for all children. They gain important experience working with each other and with children with varying levels of abilities which help all children to feel appreciated and accepted. I also believe that all children should be able to learn in a safe an inclusive environment with equal opportunities to participate as they can and do participate and then the whole community will become enriched.
