Activity 1.5: Creating an inclusive ethos and culture

Two factors that are particularly effective in contributing to an inclusive ethos and culture:

1.    Having an awareness of the life styles and individual needs of the persons within the school community is a major factor in effectively contributing to an inclusive ethos. For instance, teachers can build stronger bond with parents and guardians of the children enrolled in school by creating a meaningful parent involvement environment. Along with the teachers, the parents will play an active role in ensuring that their child is engaged in activities that enhance their learning, growth and development in a positive way.

2.    The attitudes and behavior of teachers is another factor to consider in contributing to an inclusive culture. A teacher’s attitude will determine the type of learning experience a child has. An inclusive school culture can be attained by teachers modeling the positive attitudes and behaviors they want to see within the school environment and by extension in the wider community.

Indeed!

Teachers attitudes must be positive and work well with parents. We always encourage parents to volunteer. Even now that we are teaching online we ask parents to sing a song with the child or say the school prayer etc.
