2.9 Teacher as Role Model

What you have taken from Chapter 2 of the TESSA IE Toolkit?

An inclusive teacher respects the individuality of the child and this is seen in the way the teacher speaks to the child.  Since the teacher is aware of the different needs of each pupil then the teacher will make each student feel included and a part of the classroom. The manner in which the teacher relates to the children in her class will also be the model for the students in the class as they will imitate the teacher's attitudes and behaviours.

Thus, for means that as a teacher it is my responsibility and duty to set the right example and model the way I want the students to treat one another at all times.  This will be seen in the way I interact with each, not showing favouritism or giving more opportunities to one child to the exclusivity of the others. I will ensure that the ethos and culture of my classroom is one that fosters learning and encourages cooperation regardless of who are in my class.

It also ensure that these behaviours are manifested in the classroom:

  • Setting ground rules well in advance
  • Providing well-planned activities
  • Showing respect for each pupil
  • Providing non-threatening activities
  • Being flexible
  • Accepting individual differences
  • Exhibiting a positive attitude
  • Modelling thinking skills
  • Acknowledging every response
  • Allowing pupils to be active participants
  • Creating experiences that will ensure success at least part of the time for each pupil
  • Using a wide variety of teaching modalities
