In December of 2019 I did a one day workshop offered by Ministry of Education in partnership with UNESCO. This was the Think Equal Programme. It was not about any specific disability, but dealt with the development of social and emotional in young children. helping them to understand that even though we may appear different we are all equal. Some of the main objectives were to help children :-
1. manage their own emotional and impulsive behaviors.
2. build their confidence and self esteem.
3. have empathy and show consideration for others.
When we implemented this programme in our school through the material provided by UNESCO we began to notice a change in the way the children thought about themselves and others. One of the initial lesson learnt was that no one is black no one is white but that we are al different shades of brown. It was amazing to see the way they adopted this idea. they were also taught to express their emotions through colors, for example red would indicate anger and blue would indicate sad etc. I found that this programme was very effective in helping us to show children how to be able to share their feelings and to understand their peers better. They also got to build their confidence and self esteem which projected a very happy positive energy throughout the school, making learning fun and more effective.
