Activity 1.4 Developing positive attitudes

I had a four years old girl enrolled at our Centre. She was very short. She had a heart defect and her speech was delayed. The parents said she did not speak but will carry out instructions once they told her to do such. She was attending regular doctor check up to confirm her condition. I continued to prepare my activities as normal and I always praised her. The other children at the Centre will assist her as our Centre's rules include having helping hands and caring hearts. I also did research to come up with strategies to help with her language development. The staff members also gave suggestions. We also had a few incidents when she urinated and defecated on herself and the other teachers assisted. We would of definitely like to have additional support staff at that time. We gave the parents some recommendations which they adhered to and we saw improvement in the toileting process with her.  At Centre based time whosoever teacher had her we took some one on one time with her to engage in one on one discussion and other activities. Eventually she was using one words and the parents were pleased. The child eventually graduated from our Centre. The parents came with her to visit us and she was so happy and we were told that she has Noonan Syndrome.

This goes to show how a caring attitude and individual attention can make a big difference in how a child learns and progresses.

It also shows that the collaborative efforts made by the teachers and the parents contributed significantly to the benefit of the learner.

Developing positive attitudes

I have a similar experience whereby when the child started school he was still wearing diapers so with no idea what I was doing and no support except from my colleagues we were able to see progress. His language improved he stopped wearing diapers and started to go to the bathroom on his own he also started socializing with the other children something that he wasn't doing at first. Later after he graduated from the centre his mother and I met unexpectedly a few times and she was able to inform me that the primary school he was attending he was assigned a teacher's aide. Overall his parent was also pleased with the improvement that was made during the time that he was at our centre despite the circumstances.

Based on the positive attitude given by the staff and students towards the student I am assuming that she felt accepted and her parents deeply appriceated your efforts. The results were her having fewer toileting accidents and speech improvement. well done to your caring institution. That's a great example of inclusive education.
