Attitudes to inclusion

Having a positive attitude is key to inclusion. This must be begin with teachers and administrators as this key feature enables them to understand diversity and to value differences.

The correct environment is equally important for an inclusive school.  There are many infrastructures that need to be in place to accommodate children with disabilities.  

A simple ramp or a railing can mean easier access to the school.  this helps the disabled child to feel a sense of belonging knowing that things are in place for them, therefore fostering a love and appreciation for learning and school

Yes I agree teachers need to model and display positive behaviour towards diversity as all learners are not the same and come with different needs. So, doing assist in building these learners self-esteem as well as they feel a sense of belonging. Also, positive attitudes must come from the parents as well. Parents need to take an active role in their child's learning.

The teacher is the face that the children see, so they should be positive, able and most of all wiling to make changes where and when possible.

So true Lisa. There is a school that I am familiar with in which the teachers are on the job daily before 8:30, are always welcoming and sharing light banter. The effect is children  who are very sociable, calm and productive. Positive attitude is an inclusion best practice.
