1.4 Developing positive attitudes

A lack of knowledge as well as cultural beliefs contribute significantly toward the negative attitudes displayed toward learners with disabilities. I believe that educating all stakeholders involved is the key to having a positive attitude toward differently able learners. An example of this, I can recall working with a learner who had a speech impediment. This learner would often times become very frustrated because, he wasn't understood or he'd have to repeat himself. With a little research, patience and encouragement he was able to get some help that he needed not only by me but, he was supported by the other teachers as well as his peers. The teachers of that center dedicated a time during the day called "speaking in the mirror". I believe it made a notable difference because the school placed value on him and the attitude of all stakeholders involved was a positive one with regard to his challenge.

Excellent strategy used to assist that child who had speech and language difficulties. You were very observant in your practice to see that he was getting frustrated and you sprang into action by doing some reading and research. Great job Melissa!
