Activity 2.9 - Disruptive behaviour management

In a school that I work with, we have a student that is diagnosed with ADHD, his teacher is aware of his diagnosis and has been given strategies to deal with his outbursts and disruptive traits, he has a combination of both attention deficit and hyperactive traits of the spectrum according to the DSM. One strategy that we commonly use, is a 'three strikes' system. He gets three chances to correct his disruptive behaviour on his own, which encourages him to utilize his self - regulation mechanisms taught to him by his Social Worker. After his first disruption, he is warned that if he does not self - regulate, he will not be allowed to play with his peers at break time but rather it will be spent inside with his teacher or an adult. After his second disruption, he's reminded of the strategies he ought to use ie his fidget toy or the bands around the feet of his chair. He is also told of the consequence again for failure to adjust his behaviour. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't, its success depends on several factors such as if he took his medication, what he consumed prior to arriving at school, whom he interacted with and the outcome of the interactions. When it works, he's rewarded by getting to choose a game that he likes from the games table in his class. When it doesn't, he's usually upset, but the consequence is discussed with him and explained to him so that he understands that he is in control of what he receives, whether it be positive or negative.
