So much of what Daniel said reflects what many of our parents with special needs children long to hear not only in Trinidad where I live but globally. Firstly, the teacher’s attitude towards working with specials needs children is very important for building an inclusive school. Many our teachers in the mainstream setting may feel that they are not capable because of lack of training in the area or they may simply feel that they are not cutout to deal with special children. On the other hand there are those admirable teachers who take the calling to heart and do the best they can to facilitate these children. It is obvious that at the mainstream level there is a need for a lot of ongoing planning, research and training to truly bring about an inclusive school. Another point Daniel spoke about and I totally agree with is that there needs to be substantial financial allocations and resources and support systems that are not far-fetched for supporting and promoting an inclusive school to facilitate those children who desperately need an educational system where all children are at the center of teaching and learning.
According to Lydia a resource room is very important in a school along with the special needs expert. In many of our ECCE schools in Trinidad we do have resource rooms; however, the barrier we face is the lack of experts in the room. Thankfully, there are many dedicated teachers who educate themselves to enhance the learning of the special needs children who enters the setting.
