Developing positive attitude
A male child age four came to our school diagnose from the
relevant government authority with a disability. His mother
a single mother had to work and lived fifteen miles away from the center. The
mother asked that he attend school. The administrator called all teachers and explained
the situation. The question “who will take the child? “ Some said out rightly
that they wanted no part, others said they want an assistant and the government does
not provide that service. I took the child into my class and began to engage
him with the daily schedule with the other children, participating equally in all activities. He responded
positivity. and moved from one level to another next.
As I reflect teachers negative attitude needed to be addressed.
This reflected that teachers need training, education, develop a willingness to
accept children without being biased and worked with children having a high expectation for all learners. The children were more tolerant.
They build positive friendship they learn to play and accept differences. Few teacher views to work with children with disabilities has changed .
