Two factors that I believe are particularly effective in contributing to an inclusive ethos and culture are building healthy parent/teacher relationships and regular discussion amongst staff members to develop effective strategies for achieving inclusion.
Building and maintaining healthy relationships between teachers and parents are vital since most times parents know their child best and can provide the teacher with valuable information that will assist the teachers to develop more effective strategies. Likewise, through building such relationships, teachers can also inform parents on strategies they can implement at home to facilitate inclusion. As such, parents and teachers working hand in hand will allow for a more effective approach to facilitating inclusion.
Furthermore, regular discussion amongst staff members about the effectiveness of strategies already implemented will allow for the development of improved approaches as well as help teachers who may be struggling in their efforts to promote inclusion. Teachers who are successful in their attempts can act as guides or mentors to those who find the approach to be challenging. Assessment of strategies during discussions is also important.
All in all, these ideas support the notion that creating an inclusive school requires collaboration and extends beyond the physical environment.
