1.4 Developing positive attitudes

There is the misconception by many that children with disabilities or special needs lack the ability to learn and are sometimes left behind in the education system. The reality of this misconception is that every child can learn once given the opportunity and the proper guidance to do so, this is my personal mantra and it is applied to the children in my care.

Yes I do believe that every child  is capable of learning weather they have a disability or special needs. The ethos of the environment is also pivotal toward building and fostering their needs. Added to this the teacher attitudes can impact  negatively or positively  towards achieving this goal.

I have personally witnessed this misconception. When we enrolled a student with a learning disability some teachers complained that they would have to 'slow down' their pace of teaching and keep back their other students. This belief coming from lack of education on the issue of catering to the needs of those with disabilities. Once research is done and teachers take the time to make small adjustments to their teaching (adapting lessons etc, which is what student centered really is, placing the child at the center of learning) then all students will be able to make progress. In my example, in my class the student outperformed the rest of the class.
