Activity 2.2 Creating an inclusive ethos

For teachers at a school that I know, building a positive, professional relationship with parents and other caregivers are an important part of their school's life. At this school parents and caregivers are welcomed, respected and valued. They know their children better than anyone else and have the most complete understanding of their child's physical, social, emotional and developmental needs. Teachers can use this information to understand the special needs, learning experiences and challenges of their children and the factors that can affect their learning and how best to plan for those needs.

This positive relationship between parents, caregivers and teachers help to improve their children's learning, social capabilities and emotional well being. The teachers also listen to their parents when they talk about their children as they may gain valuable insights about the child that they may not otherwise be aware of. They understand the concerns and fears parents and caregivers may have for their special needs children and take the time to explain any decisions they may have to make about their child. They are encouraged by the teachers to ask questions and talk about any concerns they may have and also give feedback related to their children's learning and any other needs they may have.

The leaders and teachers at the school strongly believe that the parent, caregiver and teacher relationship should be a partnership, where they can work together to ensure that all children get the best care and education. They further believe that when they can successfully work together to ensure a child's success, they know it's a winning situation for all.
