Activity 1:5 - Creating an inclusive ethos

Two factors that contribute to an inclusive ethos and culture are lived values and policy implementation. Based on the things that are valued, greater emphasis will be placed on prioritizing those concerns. As such, values that reflect concern for others, empathy, kindness, service, respect for persons and property can be very motivating factors to foster a sense of belonging for all persons and by extension a spirit of inclusivity.

Additionally, creating policy guidelines that ensure that persons are responsible and accountable for addressing students needs can foster an ethos of inclusivity. For example, establishing a formal referral system provides staff and parents with a tangible pathway to highlight concerns and make requests for assistance. This way, teachers are more open to addressing concerns of all students that they feel may be outside of their scope of expertise.
