Activity 1.5 - Creating an Inclusive Ethos & Culture

There is a saying that knowledge is POWER! One of the first steps in creating and inclusive ethos and culture at any school is information. All staff from the school I worked at from administration, teaching, auxiliary and ancillary staff engaged in professional development sessions which sought to inform us of learning disabilities and special needs as we had a student with Down's Syndrome. These training sessions helped equip us to make informed decisions to meet and treat with our special learner.

Secondly, having that knowledge contributed to a display of positive attitudes from all staff members because of the self confidence we now had in our skills and abilities to educate that learner which in turn made her feel comfortable and welcomed. Her parents upon seeing the positive attitudes of teachers and all staff members were rest assured that their child will be embraced in the school.
