The strategy that have I have used quite often is to give over-active or disruptive students meaningful tasks to do. This may include giving out work and helping to tidy up or pack the classroom. This helps to redirect their energy towards positive and appropriate behaviour. For example, I would say Kenny, would you like to be my little helper for today? The response is always yes and they get excited. I will then let the class know that Kenny will be my helper for the day, so please cooperate with him. In giving Kenny different task to do, I would often praise him, when he does something. I find that this strategy makes the child feel important, it helps to boost their self-esteem and self-worth. The child feels proud of their accomplishments and always want to show me how well they did a task. They are always excited to tell their parents what they helped me with today and how Miss, said they did a great job.
