Working with families

The school Administrator can establish a PTA,where parent can willingly volunteer their time and expertise to assist with the daily managing of the school.

Home visits can be done to further understand the child's background and family life.

I myself agree and have seen these said strategies, successfully implemented at our school as well as the establishing of a parent skill bank, which has served to aid in the overall up keep of the school  on our limited budget.

Yes indeed this is an excellent source of gathering the skills of parents that can help sustain and strengthen the school. For example parents can volunteer to do a cookery activity, read  a story aloud or assist in other areas where their skills are matched. This helps to promote and build the esteem of the child whose parent is involved in this aspect.

In the past home visits were carried out to not only collect bio-data on the child but to gain an overall understanding of the child's home environment. Teachers could then take the opportunity to help set up a learning area for the child, give advice on print rich environment and just generally forge the home/school links in school curriculum.

Today, we should consider security in numbers. Outside the safety of the Centre teachers should also collaborate with a social worker, itinerant teacher, nurse, or school administrator before embarking on home visits. This too should be in keeping with the Standards and policies for operating educational institutions.
