Identifying An Inclusive School

I was able to identify a particular school as being inclusive because of the layout of the classrooms and the activity area. The students were in groups. These groups though were of mixed abilities with those with learning difficulties not on their own, so that peer learning is a greatly emphasized. The activity corner consists of worksheets that students are free to choose from. They include activities such as cutting, colouring, matching, short peer games and folding to name a few. There are also worksheets with differentiated questions/tasks. These were available so that when formal teaching/learning moments were finished the students were free to choose what they wanted to do from that corner.

I totally agree with this system where activities of worksheet is provided for free choice. Children will be encouraged to try different levels.

I recognised that the highlighted features of an online school were present in a particular school. This school ensures that the physical setting is accessible to the disabled and that the attitudes of those employed there are accommodating. As Lydia mentioned, having a resource room with specialists is a great way of creating an inclusive environment as it permits learners with the support they may require. Another thing which can be beneficial to learners in an inclusive environment is the provision of activities and the allocation of sufficient time for them to learn.

Identifying an inclusive school

Very good points Patricia and Dannielle.

Where I work the school already has inclusive features in place. The physical environment is in place. There are ramps and the washroom facilities are roomy with bars when needed for leverage for the child. The teachers are sent on professional development workshops and collaboration is done on return from the workshops allowing staff to work together to implement the strategies learnt.
