A school with an inclusive ethos and culture will have clear policies about Inclusive education that set out:
3. How they will monitor progress, share information and review pupils’ support needs
The school I know achieves this policy through a process of data collection.
Firstly, a general assessment is done to determine the holistic (social, emotional, cognitive, communication skills etc.) development of the child. Secondly, this data is used to plan lessons or activities that will meet the child’s individual needs for their specific area of development.
For instance, a child who needs to develop physical skills will be given a course of activities for a specific period of time, e.g. (a 4 week period) to accomplish a particular goal. With the use of a data sheet specific tasks will be outlined. The child will attempt each task and his/her progress will be recorded on the sheet. The recordings are logged on a weekly basis to cover each week within the specified time frame set to accomplish the particular goal. Lessons or activities will be planned and added till the end of the 4 week period. The data collected will help the teacher to determine if the child has accomplished the goal or if further help is needed to master the particular skill.
Also, the data collection or data sheets are very effective as they are often used to share information with parents and other teachers of the child’s progress. And especially in the case of a teacher being absent from school the data collected is made available for another teacher to utilize as a follow up.
