Monitoring inclusivity

Schools in the last decade in my country have been making some attempt to outfit schools to cater for the specials needs children, more so physically. I have seen ramps and rails installed, doorways widened, washrooms updated, installation of proper signage, upgrade lighting and create more spacious classrooms, just to name a few.

At my school, we have taken countless opportunities to educate our students about special needs children, so that they can be more equipped to understand a friend’s situation better. We use every opportunity to celebrate culture and diversity, so that everyone can feel a sense of belonging. We have also implemented a buddy system where responsible students assist with schoolwork, reading and other minor activities such as trips to the school cafeteria.

Some teachers have been continuously enhancing their knowledge through workshops and seminars. They bring their knowledge to the classroom to make learning exciting for all. This has led to full class participation. Our school also has instruments in place to measure students’ performances, so upon assessment, students learning needs can be catered for. This may not sound like anything significant, but these little things we have put in place, makes a big difference. Every student feels extraordinary and no one feels left out.
