Activity 3.3 Being an effective inclusive teacher.

The classroom is a very dynamic environment . As such PD sessions need to be geared towards the development of educators, who are mindful and respectful to the learners who they serve. Every child is unique and so is the 'context' that they exists in.

Well said Diann, the classroom is a constantly changing place. As a result, professional development sessions should focus on the development of educators who are conscientious of and respectful of the students they represent. Excellent point made!

Activity 3.3 Being an effective inclusive teacher

Four attributes of an inclusive teacher are:

1. The teacher is compassionate

2. The teacher must have a genuine interest in seeing all students succeed

3. The teacher must not be biased in any way

4. The teacher must be able to adapt and be able to go above and beyond the normal spectrum of duties and expectations to assist those who need it.

The knowledge and skills that the inclusive teacher must have for the above attributes:

1. The teacher needs to have a genuine love and appreciation for people in general.

2. The teacher must be able to empathize with the challenges that all students face and have a genuine desire to help them.

3. As much as you have to recognize and reward the high performing students you will seek to find innovative ways to motivate and treat the others with respect and appreciation and as equals.

4. Recognizing the fact that some students need more help than others, I am prepared to assist those students in every way to ensure their success.

As a Teacher, the sort of Professional Development opportunities I need are:

1. How to deal with maladaptive behaviour.

2. Becoming an effective Teacher.

3. Managing emotions under stress.

 Important and informative points.

Additionally these are attributes of an effective inclusive teacher-

Organization is key for all teachers, especially deal with disabled students.

Creativity Since all children have different learning styles, a special education teacher must have the ability to adapt lessons that work for the strengths of each child.

Acceptance A special education teacher works alongside disabled students with various problems. No matter the issues, this professional must accept all children and interact with dignity and respect.

Patience When a child has special needs, patience is a must. Since this type of student takes longer to perform simple tasks, understanding is key for development.

These are indeed critical attributes for the teacher and i would think there should be ways ways how Teacher Educators should demonstrate and model these attributes in the course of training the teachers

ALIYAH, the beauty about teaching is that we learn a lot on the job. Further, continous SBTD courses and now the newly introduced learning study offers more opportunities for us to better our skills. The last part on Managing emotions under stress marks a teacher's emotional/mental maturity. Fortunately it also comes with time as we interact with our students, collegues and professionals in various areas of specialization eg school counsellors, psychologists etc. We also get a lot of information from written word (motivation books) and online resources- I particularly like TED videos that deal with emotional/mental/spiritual wellbeing.

Activity 3.3: Being an effective inclusive teacher

I believe it is necessary to be continuously engaged in professional development sessions because we are living in a world in which there are constant changes evolving and as educators you must have that love and passion to want to learn more so you can gain knowledge which you can apply in your teaching to meet the individual needs of the children in your care, share or educate the parents and teachers or colleagues..

Every child is unique and special and so is the 'context' that they exists in. In the classroom learning is constantly changing/ Teachers must be very compassionate to their student and should love what they are doing.Teachers must not display a scene of baseness with any child, as teachers you should be able to go beyond the call of duties.Teachers should be able to treat others with great respect and appreciation ,it is not a job but a profession. As teachers ,you should be mindful that some children needs more attention than others.Teachers must be organised when dealing with disable children.

The education system is always evolving hence as teachers we should always engage in continuous PD to be more competent in our profession. The knowledge and skills gain will always help us move forward to improve our thinking and teaching techniques. Some attributes that teachers should have and adapt to especially when working with pre-schoolers are: Good teachers have; patience (is virtue), focus on collaboration (working together creates a better learning experience), are adaptable (showcases our ability to be resourceful) and share their best practices (learning and teaching becomes more accessible and effective) .

Indeed. I believe that PD courses should be done with educators to identify differences in learners ability. On many occasions, students are struggling and teachers are not even aware of what is happening in their classroom. The learner ability is of great importance to me and any PD sessions to help identify gaps in learning would be welcomed.

As a teacher it is my belief that an effective inclusive teacher need to have certain attributes. Some of these attributes are:

Patience- dealing with special needs children patience is a must as they may take a longer time to complete certain tasks as well as needs further attention in the center…..teachers need to ensure they are very patient with the.

Positive attitude: teachers need to have a positive attitude when teaching children with disabilities as well as me mindful of their language. Ensure that language is not used to hurt the disable child but rather ensure they feel included and loved.

Varying teaching styles: Since all children have different learning styles, a special education teacher must have the ability to adapt lessons that work for the strengths of each child.

Establish good relationships with children- working with special needs children, the teacher needs to embrace and accept the child and try to foster meaningful relationships with the child.

Willing to develop professionally-always be willing to engage in professional development workshops to enhance quality of teaching.

An Effective Inclusive Teacher possesses the following characteristics:-

1 Patience - patience is a must, since students may take longer to perform simple tasks or understand a given task. The teacher must be patient and allow children the time they need to complete their task.

2 Creativity - Teachers should be able to adapt lessons in a creative way to cater to the individual needs of children. This may mean, using three different strategies to execute one lesson, which a creative teacher has the ability to make happen.

3 Organization - An effective Teacher should organize her classroom environment by labeling various areas to avoid confusion among the children. Children taught in an organized environment exhibit higher confidence levels.

3 Adaptability  - Children may have unexpected outbursts, therefore teachers must be able to adapt, be able to maintain order, keep schedule  and be flexible all at once because they never know what might happen.

Professional development is very important as it improves the necessary skills needed to be an effective Teacher.
