Two things I will take forward from this course is first and foremost more emphasis on the creation of a positive ethos in my classroom. I will do more to ensure that all students are made to feel comfortable and establish an atmosphere where all students are respected. Although I do this, I now see what a great impact it may have on a student's learning for example a student who doesn't feel comfortable may refrain from asking for clarification. A simple thing as this can prevent a student with no disability from participating fully in a classroom and have an even greater impact on a student with a disability who may already have a lower self esteem due to his/her condition and preconceived notions about him or her.
The second thing is I will take forward is the notion in the mainstream classroom that there is nothing we can do to help a child with a disability. Too often mainstream teachers believe that they are not trained to address situation as this when in fact we can make a world of a difference by simply engaging external stakeholders. We can consult with parents, Ministries, NGO's, Companies and other stakeholders to provide information, gain access special services, purchase devices, access special training etc. An inclusive school is a supportive school. It does not mean we have to do everything ourselves.
