Features that contribute to an Inclusive school are:
Firstly, POSITIVE TEACHER ATTITUDE - teachers must reflect positive attitudes by displaying their willingness towards embracing inclusion in the classroom (Daniel spoke of “soft skills which refers to teacher’s attitude). Teachers need to recognize and understand that all children can learn. They all have the potential to learn, and it is within the role of a teacher to try as best as possible to equip his/herself with the knowledge and skills (Professional Development and Training) required to achieve this objective. Teachers work not alone but in a collaborative effort with colleagues to formulate new strategies in curriculum adaption and physical modification to create inclusive classrooms.
Secondly, BUILDING PARTNERSHIPS - it is most beneficial to build strong partnerships for creating an inclusive school. When parents work with teachers, pertinent information is obtained and exchanged so that both parties have a better understanding of barriers/challenges which the students encounter and they can work together to overcome these. Parents prove to be resourceful personnel and they can make a positive contribution to inclusive classrooms. Medical experts, NGO’s and sign language are other resourceful partners/stakeholders who have crucial roles to play in creating an inclusive school.
Inclusiveness can be achieved by a school and community effort towards learners.
