Developing positive attitudes towards inclusion starts with the teachers, but it also extends beyond the school setting. The professional even though are willing to adapt inclusion of all students regardless of needs, can only achieve success by involving all stake holders. This can be done by sensitizing all stakeholders on the benefits of inclusion. Creating an awareness can assist in developing positive attitudes beyond the school setting. It can also forge a bond of commitment and create a support system, willing to commit towards the removal of barriers and provide resources, striving to create an inclusive school.
At our Centre, there was a student who were displaying a delay in expressive language. As the teacher I first monitored (assessed) the student. Then seeking the support of other staff members and the parents, we were able to identify the specific needs of the student. He was an only child who mostly engaged in solitary play and the use of a cellphone to look at educational videos. However he lacked social interaction, which hindered his expressive language. I was able to provide several language experiences to help him in developing his expressive language with the support of other staff members and his parents. I also sought the assistance of a community member who provided a Cd player for our language area.
Attending to attitudes is indeed important for creating an inclusive school. Attitudes make the whole environment receptive and makes everyone feel at home and wanted hence a strong feeling of belonging develops in everyone including those with disabilities.
