Activity 4.5 Practical benefits to schools of outside organisatonsg

Case Studies: Reflections

Ebhotwe Primary School

One of the most important thing I gathered from the video was the kind of support that was available for the children and their families such as nutrition, counselling and HIV support for families. The teachers were also very fortunate to be given the kind of support they needed to be able to meet the learning needs of all their children, for example, adaptations of materials, assistance in their classroom and support from parent and the support team.

The interaction I observed between the teachers and the children reminded me a lot of the way teachers and children interacted at a school I am familiar with. A school where all children felt loved, safe and comfortable to be themselves and to engage in their learning.

So very true, "inclusive education is not about being perfect but it is about understanding what a child can do.' I also feel strongly about what was said by one of the class teachers (Glenda), "there is nothing to be afraid of children with disabilities, it's about acceptance."

Itinerant teachers in Sierra Leone

Abdul being a specialist teacher had the will to share his knowledge and skills with not just one school but many schools. He was able to work with teachers, children and their parents. How amazing! I think the Itinerant teacher model is commendable and should be fully supported.

Example of other school working with outside organisations.

In the country where I work the Rotary Foundation is an organisation that works with schools to support basic education and literacy and reduce gender disparity in education. They support education for all children and their teachers. In a school I am familiar with the teachers were introduced to and trained to use the SOUNS program which taught the teachers how to improve literacy by teaching their children to recognise letters by sounds instead of names. sounds
