The first thing that I will take
forward from this course into my practice is to encourage a
school-base teacher development group. I am now convinced that every
school can transform their setting into an inclusive one. The step I
would take to to this is to bring it up at the earliest staff meeting.
Encourage teachers to imagine that each of us had a child with a
disability and how they would feel if they are turned away from the
school. I would the ask them to share their feelings openly. The next
step would be, what can we do to help and brainstorm all the necessary support systems and resourcses we would need to make this happen.
The second aspect of the course I will take with me is to include the voice of the child when it comes to his/her learning. We tend to focus on the limitations of a disability and how we can make a childs life more comfortable which is very important, but we must also focus on the emotional development of the child and consider what they may want to make learning more meaningful to the child. In order to to this I would simply talk to the child, pose relevant questions so that the child can express how they feel and what they think we as teachers can do to help.
