1.4 Developing Positive Attitudes

The attitudes Daniel and Lydia spoke about was very interesting. My experience in the Early childhood setting was with a boy who had a speak impairment. He will shake his head to answer or clench his jaw and murmur. No one understood what he was saying. My colleagues and I began using various strategies to assist him. We will encourage him to say the word rather than point or murmur. It was a constant reminder for him and he was rewarded for his progress using stickers or gifts. After sometime he began using words and then sentences.

Good demonstration, Shalini, of positive non judgemental and loving attitude towards a child with disability which facilitated him to develop speech. Thank you for sharing.Thank you for helping the boy.

This practice is also used at the Centre where I work. The Teachers also use more Nursery Rhymes and Songs that the child likes to encourage speech. As well as placing the child's hand on their throat to feel the sound of a letter or word then place the child's hand on his own throat for the child to attempt making the sound.
