TEACHERS CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

In week 3 we found out that there are many benefits when a teacher prioritise  Continuing Professional Development (CPD). We also mentioned challenges that hinder uptake of CPD by teachers. HOW THEN CAN WE MOTIVATE TEACHERS TO TAKE PART IN CPD?

Some ways in which we can motivate teachers to be a part of CPD are:

§  Recognizing teachers key stress times. Don’t overload teachers with professional development during report card season! Avoid new initiatives and stresses during the end of the term, report-writing periods, or while teachers are marking exams. This causes teachers’ motivation to slowly fade.

§  Publicly praise teachers. If a teacher feels valued, you won’t need to worry about motivating them. These teachers will know how to stay motivated. Making each teacher feel valued can be as simple as including an announcement in the morning thanking the teacher for something that they have done recently. You can also make this a larger gesture by organizing a staff lunch in which you personally thank teachers for outstanding contributions to the school.

§  Empower each teacher’s strengths. Every teacher has strengths and weaknesses. When teachers are able to use that strength in the classroom, it’s easy to see how much more engaged and inspired students become. It may be difficult for some teachers to recognize their own strengths, especially while trying to keep up with curriculum standards. To help them figure out what works in their classroom, have each teacher think about any particular lessons that worked really well, and any tools or techniques that the teacher likes to use.

Those are very useful initiatives.

I Think that teachers can be motivated when they are shown appreciation at these development workshops, they need to feel that they are there not just to attend a workshop to sit and listen but there must be some sort of recognition of their contribution to education.

Yes Claudetta. Recognition of teachers participation and contributions is important in motivating them.

Florence, we can first conduct a needs assessment of what teachers actually need and then conduct Professional Development  to address  those issues. Too often CPD are planned without careful  analysis of data gathered or what needs are and this sometimes lead to boredom and unwillingness to participate.

Here I am thinking Florence that having an incentive programme will motivate teachers to be more involved in Continuing Professional Development (CPD) seminars. As was suggested by Nicola, conducted a needs assessment. This way you will be able to work with teachers and issues that are relevant to them.

Yes Nicola the starting point is need assessment so that what is needed by the teachers is what is offered. This will motivate the teachers into learning the course.

Teachers are already full of work  and it is quite hard to motivate them to take part in CPD. I think it would be best to put them in groups after the needs assessment so to enjoy sharing ideas and learning together. They learn what they want to learn rather than providing a PD on something they already know.
