Having listened to the video I believe that the described attitude came from the parents and teachers. Parents are the ones who make the decision of which school and class their child goes to. Some teachers believe that some learners because of their diverse needs have lower abilities. Society refers to these children in an unfriendly manner, as a result of this I believe to develop a positive attitude towards inclusion all stake holders (parent, teachers, and members of the wider community…) should be involved.
While viewing this video I recalled an experience I had with the parent of a seven year old child. The child displayed the characteristics of learning disability. The parent was privy to the observation and was asked to have the child tested, however she was in total denial and she refused. She gave various reasons why the child was under performing such as “the teacher’s inability to teach, the separation from the father, there is not enough time spent with her” and she went on and on. At age ten when the child is preparing to write a high stakes examination she was tested and diagnosed with intellectual disability. The parent was very apologetic and was willing to give assistance wherever needed. At this time it was just a matter of explaining to her the intervention that was taking place in the classroom.
