Important Features of an Inclusive School

Dear Colleagues

To have an administration that sees the value of including the allocation of time for all teachers to facilitate inclusion in their classroom.

To have an administration that promotes a staff of teachers who practice the habit/behaviour of seeking the advice of colleagues and cooperating with colleagues rather than working as an individual in isolated classrooms.

Features of an Inclusive Classroom.

An Inclusive Classroom should have trained Teachers with the expertise to plan and adjust the Curriculum and Teaching strategies to cater to the needs of all children.

Along with the Curriculum, the physical environment must also be transformed to suit the needs of children with disabilities, this is the only way to give children an equal opportunity to attend school, learn and develop along with their peers.

The school environment where I work currently, have no facilities to accommodate children with special needs, there are no resource materials or equipment. However there is little progress being made as some of the newest models of school has made some adjustments to the physical environment and spaces to accommodate children.

Features of an inclusive school must just be evidently present. To me they include pathways, corridors that are adusted with built-in ramps instead of say stairs to easen movement of especially visually/physically impaired .Levelling of the school's physical landscape to rid it of unnecessary pysical bumps and potholes is also another way of making a school inclusive. Secondly, the human element of exercising care, love and support toward one another but more so toward children with disabilities to make them feel warm and loved .This positivity fosters incusivisity.
