It should be noted that positive behavior strategies are evidence-based, proactive approaches to changing challenging student behavior.
Having been involved in special education, I have come across many students with behavioral problems and I have tried many strategies but the one that worked best is:
My tried strategy to positively manage behavior is: Classroom layout that supports students.
Learning centers were set up to facilitate student’s different learning styles. The classroom was arranged to allow smooth transition of students. For my most challenging students they were seated near peers who model appropriate behavior and who can ignore inappropriate behavior, or corral next to me to allow me to use strategies like active supervision and pre-correction (students are reminded about the expected behavior before potential behavior problem.
I have used these strategies in my classroom over a period of time. About two years ago I had a class of twenty-five students four of whom were very disruptive. I must say the most effective of my strategies were placing the students near peers who modelled appropriate behavior and who were able to ignore the inappropriate behavior displayed by the student.
