Inclusive Ethos and Culture

Two factors that are particularly effective in contributing to an inclusive ethos and culture are:

1. Support from the school's staff members.

With full support from the school's staff members this will ensure that diverse thinking is respected and valued. It will show that each learner is supported in their abilities without discrimination. Therefore with this support, staff members demonstrates an understanding that each individual is unique and despite that they are part of a supportive team rather than alone.

2. Full involvement from families.

Since parents/guardians are the only adults that would be there throughout the child's educational process they have the opportunity to create a supportive home environment for the learner. They can build on the student's success as they work with the school staff and create new relationships. Also, families can provide helpful information on whether current strategies and instructions are benefiting to the learner.

Well said Tara! I particularly liked your view that families can give important feedback on whether the strategies being used at school are helping the learner or not. This is actually an important part of the 360 degree cycle of communication.

The importance of  involving family, and by extension the wider school community cannot be over emphasized if an enduring inclusive school ethos and culture are to be  cultivated.Besides providing the school with much needed bio-data and other relevant information about their  children, families and  communities also offer moral and financial support. These entities also contribute useful ideas and opinions which are incorporated in management of inclusive school.

Indiscriminate recognition of achievement of learners through verbal  appreciation and  physical awards such as trophies  is a very positive culture that marks an inclusive school. This goes along way to motivate all learners to work hard in both academics and co -curricula activities in hope to be the best and be awarded without bias.
