3.2: Experiences of professional development

A professional development experience that challenged my thinking and helped to improve my practice would be developmental workshops. Workshops are good for exposing people to new ideas, techniques and colleagues. By bringing together diverse groups of people who would normally not meet each other, workshops instantiate the notion of the strength of weak ties. Weak ties are mechanisms through which we learn novel information. Since we tend to form a strong bond with similar peers teachers who teach in the same school, we often know and share the same information. Workshops introduce teachers to new peers with whom they would not normally interact.

I believe that training either through workshops, online training etc contribute to professional development. It creates awarness through interactive sessions, course materials which asist teachers, adinistrators and learners to improve on their skills and increase on their knowledge.  Colloborating with others e.g collegues or peers through peer reviews , practise to add on experience and improve on skill as well as reflective teaching, management and administration.

I concur that workshops as a way of helping teachers to  sharpen their professional skills and open before them an array of opportunities for further career development.

I was invited to a workshop together with colleagues with whom I shared teaching subjects. This was a thrilling experience as we were refreshed and empowered regarding  adoption of enhanced methodologies and use of additional  resources to enable us effectively teach various areas within our  subjects( new aspects were included in the curriculum) .The workshop provided exposure, opportunity to build a spirit of collegiality, teamwork and enduring professional relationships that impact positively on teaching/learning at school.
