In my view, two important features of an inclusive school are that the physical environment accommodates learners with different needs (for example, ramps, elevators, rails etc are available to facilitate students with special needs), and that the level of awareness and willingness to include different needs of students among faculty and students is high.
In my school, efforts were made during construction of the building to include ramps wherever needed, to facilitate the use of wheelchairs. Also, an elevator was placed in one building to support people with mobility issues. However, more can be done to improve facilitation by adding rails and re-adapting washrooms. Spreading awareness and developing understanding of inclusiveness among staff and students is a long-term target at our school. It is being done at the staff level through professional development training.
What I found interesting about the views shared by Daniel was his explanation of soft skills. Previously, I had understood soft skills to be those skills that allow a teacher to better manage his/her classroom, by using invisible techniques that do not interrupt the teaching and learning process. According to Daniel, soft skills are also those skills that exude a positive attitude among staff and school adminisitration, towards inclusiveness both in policy and action. Both talks were inspiring and showed different views on what inclusion can mean.
