Ethos and Culture Factors

Creating an inclusive ethos and culture is an essential part in education. Culture which determines the habits and tradition in a community and ethos the character values of people. In an institution it is important that ‘ethos’ and ‘culture’ emerge’ from actions, roles and structures within the institution. We need to have a clear understanding that these aspects are important for schools that want to develop inclusion education.

Two factors that I think are particularly effective in contributing to an inclusive ethos and culture are parents involvement and the dedication of administrators and teachers when working with students.

I believe that parents input in their child's education is very important. Communication with parents about children's learning is critical in developing children's learning. At my school we have prepared special programs whereby we celebrate the achievement of students and we also celebrate and honor parents that are always working with their children and cooperating in school activities. We schedule time per month for parents to be in class and we named it parents visitation day whereby, parents can be in class during lessons along with their children. I am witness of the excitement most of my students have when parents will be in class with them, they feel privileged. Parents' involvement is essential.

The other factor is the dedication of administrators and teachers in working with students. As teachers we need to be role models and demonstrate positive attitudes and make sure that our students feel included and part of our group. We need to promote quality and equal education to all. As educators, we must be engaged in regular training for teachers to enhance us with strategies that will help us in planning activities to incorporate each and everyone of our students. As educators along with parents we are responsible in molding our children and dedicating ourselves to provide them with values that are important in the life of our children.
