Teachers as role models in inclusive schools

As educators, we are role models molding children to become the best that they can be. They rely on us and we must be accountable of being respectful and care for them and make sure they know and feel our care for them. We need to make them feel that they are included and let them know that each one of them is different, unique and special in their very own way. It is very important to use respectful words when communicating with others. As teachers we are role models and children are always listening and observing us in every way so after parents, we as teachers need to be and show the example of how to treat and communicate with others. We need to always have in mind to avoid using words that would hurt others feelings because if we do so we can bring down our children's self-esteem instead of uplifting it. We need to practice and train other students to use the correct words when referring to students with special needs. As teachers, our responsibility is to get to know our students. It is important that as from the beginning we get to know our students' weaknesses and strengths, we need to be aware of the needs of each of our students in order to plan activities to help them develop their knowledge and skills. We need to cater for all students to make them feel included by preparing activities that they will be willing to participate and that will help them feel confident, safe and will uplift their self-esteem. As teachers, we need to treat every one fairly and praise students when they deserve it. In this way children will feel included and will be willing to engaged and motivated to take part in class activities. As educators, we need to be very vigilant and if there is any kind of bullying be ready to deal with the issue immediately. Good communication with students is essential especially when these types of issues are present in school. Children should feel confident of sharing they way they feel or how others make them feel. As teachers we need to practice all the following behaviors to create and foster an inclusive classroom:
  • Setting ground rules well in advance
  • Providing well-planned activities
  • Showing respect for each pupil
  • Providing non-threatening activities
  • Being flexible
  • Accepting individual differences
  • Exhibiting a positive attitude
  • Modelling thinking skills
  • Acknowledging every response
  • Allowing pupils to be active participants
  • Creating experiences that will ensure success at least part of the time for each pupil
  • Using a wide variety of teaching modalities

All of the above listed are essential for inclusive teachers.
