3.2

This course “Creating an Inclusive school” really had an impact on me. When we first got the email, I was not that happy, as to me it was just the way the Ministry wanted to keep you occupied as you are home. I did not see it as something to impact how I view teaching and learning, my staff, children, and parents and how to improve the schools going forward, just added work and we were already taking all children as long as we have the space.

As I began getting deeper into the studies, my impression began to change. I began to look at “inclusion” differently, not looking at children as a group, but as individuals with individual needs. Reflecting on our policies, vision and mission to see if they are inclusive, and if our teaching and learning strategies are aligned with them and sensitizing staff on inclusion, that all could be on the same page through regular meetings , so we can make the needed changes as we go forward.

3.2 Experiences of Professional development

I am very grateful for the formal PD I am receiving  in taking the free courses by doing these online courses like Inclusive Learning and Teaching,What children's perspectives tell us about inclusion and other courses.Currently doing this course Creating an Inclusive School provides opportunity for me as an Inclusive education Officer to be more effective in supporting and helping the current primary school teachers to be more inclusive in their teaching practices to cater to the diverse needs of the children in their classrooms.Enrolling in these free online courses as my professional development has given me more confidence in myself, and given me a deeper understanding of many issues how to approach teachers ,creating resources and sharing resources amongst teachers in my school visits  ,listen and to be open minded by willing to to try new teaching methods.I even taught students using inclusive practices  with diverse needs while the current teachers would observe me  as their professional Development in my school visits .After my teaching I was open to any suggestions or discussions by the teachers. Here we would share ideas ,this helped to change the attitudes of Head teachers and teachers that were negative about been inclusive in your practice -everyone responsibilities .Through these school visits as an IE officer and demonstrating Inclusive practise helped myself and the teachers with their Head teacher to be more effective in their teaching to meet the diverse needs of the learners in their classroom. Not only but to change their attitude to be more positive about been incluisve than been exclusive .
