Lesson 15

15 Tutorial videos

Read the text and then complete the quiz.

During this course you have learned a lot about participatory video techniques by watching video tutorials. Video tutorials are a simple way to learn step by step how to do certain things, guiding viewers into the proper way of using a product or a service, for example. For this reason they are also a very powerful tool to promote a business.

As an example, a woman runs a small business selling homemade natural soaps. She could use tutorial videos to increase her number of clients. Here are two examples of video tutorials you could produce:

  1. A tutorial where you share some tips on how to produce a good homemade soap. (This is a good way to show your skills in action and engage your audience)
  2. A tutorial where you explain how to select the best soaps for different skins. (This is a good opportunity for you to showcase the different products you sell as well as your expert knowledge of your market).

You can upload your video tutorials on different online sharing platforms such as YouTube or Vimeo.

Remember, to be effective tutorials must meet minimum quality standards. They should not be too long (usually 5 to 10 minutes is enough), must have a well-defined structure, and be direct and clear on both audio and video.

A script will help you set guidelines so that you can follow a specific order during recording.

A good script requires several clear concepts:

  • A good introduction that sets out clearly what you are going to talk about.
  • It must be straightforward and concise, explaining concepts clearly.
  • Every instruction given must also be easy to understand and follow.
  • You must close your video with a simple and straightforward conclusion.

By taking this course you should now have all the skills you need to create your own participatory videos and video tutorials. You can now try to create your own video tutorials to support your participatory video projects or for your personal use.
