Keep practising!
The best way to develop and maintain your numeracy skills is to practise as much as possible. As you will have seen in this course, day-to-day life is full of opportunities to use numbers.
Here are some ideas:
- Grocery shopping: Compare prices per unit (e.g., price per ounce or price per kilogram) to get the best deals. Estimate the total cost of your shopping before reaching the checkout counter.
- Cooking and baking: Use measurements and proportions when following recipes. Practise converting units and adjusting recipe servings accordingly.
- DIY projects: Measure materials accurately for home improvement projects. Calculate areas and volumes when painting rooms, laying tiles, or building furniture.
- Time management: Use time management techniques to allocate time for different tasks throughout the day. Practice estimating time intervals and sticking to schedules.
- Playing games: Play board games or card games that involve strategy and arithmetic, such as Scrabble, Sudoku, or card games like Poker or Bridge.
- Reading labels and instructions: Pay attention to numerical information on product labels, medication instructions, and household appliances. Practice interpreting measurements, dosage, and safety guidelines.
- Daily maths challenges: Set aside a few minutes each day to solve maths problems or puzzles. Use online resources or smartphone apps to access daily math challenges tailored to your skill level.
- Special interests: use numeracy to become an expert in your hobby or special interest area, whether that be sport, knitting, model railways, or heavy metal music! You are bound to find statistical information and measurements associated that deepen your understanding and make your leisure interests even more entertaining.
