The Number Confidence for Work online module was designed and developed by Lexedio Ltd in consultation with the Multiply adult numeracy teaching team at UHI North, West and Hebrides, part of the University of the Highlands and Islands. It is part of the Multiply project funded by the UK Government through Highland Council.

The Mathemap concept and scenario-based approach in the Activity Zone were inspired and informed by ‘Numeracy as Social Practice’ (NSP) approaches, which support learners ‘to make sense of non-mathematical contexts through a mathematical lens’ (Yasukawa, K., Rogers, A., Jackson, K. and Street, B. (Eds) (2018).

The Activity Zone resources are contextualised for learners living in the Scottish Highlands and contain a variety of references to Scottish Highland culture, including Gaelic language. The fictional town of Portimadie was named through a creative translation of the Gaelic “Port Iomadaich” meaning “Port Multiply”, but anglicised as many Highland places are today. However, an effort has been made to incorporate diversity, using fictional characters of different ages, ethnicities and socioeconomic backgrounds.
