6.5 Viewing Series A as a Partnership
Perhaps the most important principle in understanding Series A deal structures is perspective. Founders should view the round not as a one-time transaction, but as the start of a long-term partnership with investors.
Series A investors are not merely providing capital They are investing in the company’s future growth, governance and strategic direction. Their involvement extends beyond money: they bring expertise, networks and guidance which can be critical to scaling successfully.
Recognising this partnership mindset shapes negotiations and interactions. For example, transparency about challenges, candid discussion of strategy and openness to guidance strengthen trust and collaboration. Conversely, approaching the round purely transactionally, focusing narrowly on valuation without considering governance, alignment or long-term consequences, can create tension and limit the value investors bring to the table.
