Introduction and 'meet and greet'

The word introduction

The tasks for this 1st topic are...

  1. An exercise to get you to think about what you would like from an agency if you were going for help with an addiction.
  2. You will explore some of the fundamentals of being effective that, over years of changing cultures, have been shown to be important.
  3. You will read a short extract on dealing with intoxicated behaviour.
  4. To debate the motion: ‘Creating rapport is more important than getting on with treatment’.
  5. Finally, discussion with your study group, however you have construed it, is about clarifying your thoughts on organisational culture and how it might be relevant to your own practice.

Here is an exercise to get you started

First impressions count. You are approaching a place from which you are seeking help…

  1. What would make you feel welcome?
  2. What would make you feel you had come to the right place?
  3. What would make you feel that people in this place were concerned about you?
  4. What would make you feel that the help you were seeking was going to be forthcoming?

Think about how you would ‘meet and greet’ in your own agency. Rehearse your ‘meet and greet’ plan with colleagues or friends and modify it until it feels comfortable and natural.

When you are happy that you have done this task move on to the Meet and Greet reflections.
