Welcome to OpenLearn

Welcome to OpenLearn – the home of free learning from The Open University. We deliver bite-sized learning experiences designed to fit easily into daily life. Any one of our hundreds of courses can be studied anywhere, anytime and completed at your own pace. Whether you’re looking to get promoted at work, support your children with their schoolwork, looking for extra study materials as a student, or simply passionate about a subject, we are open to all.

While you can access all OpenLearn material without creating an account, doing so enables you to enrol on courses, which means that you can save your progress and earn statements of participation and digital badges.

The following short video will show you:

  • how to create an account
  • how to enrol on a course
  • how to manage and track your progress
  • how to earn your statement of participation and/or digital badge
  • and where to find them!

Creating an OpenLearn account

It takes just a minute to set up your OpenLearn user account and profile, but if you have any further questions about creating and managing your account, visit our My OpenLearn account page.

Finding and enrolling on a course

Browse our course catalogue to find your perfect course. Then, once you’ve logged in, enrolling is just a click away! Every course has an ‘Enrol now’ button, so getting started is simple. Click here if you still have questions about starting a free course.

Statements of participation and digital badges

Almost every course completed earns you a statement of participation, while our range of badged courses will also earn you a digital badge and continuing professional development points. Statements and badges will appear in the ‘My achievements’ section of your OpenLearn profile.

Sharing your achievements

Your digital badges can be shared via social media, linked to a CV or shared with employers and tutors as proof of your learning as well as demonstration of your commitment to studying and interest in a subject.

Finding and using non-course content

While our courses are incredibly popular, there’s much more to discover on OpenLearn, with thousands of bite-sized resources from as little as five minutes. Explore articles, videos, podcasts, quizzes, games and interactives via our key content hubs, or our Games, quizzes and activities collection.
