So, I started it late January. I also added high doses of Omega 3's too, because from the small amounts of research they've done on dosages, they've found it's the high doses that tend to help with mental health (versus heart or joint health). Based on that, I started taking 2400mg/day of Omega 3's, with 864mg of EPA and 576mg of DHA, along with the diet change.
Honestly, for the pain, it's not really better overall. It's more that if I eat fast food or refined sugar stuff, the pain is much, much worse the next day.
What I was not expecting, however, is how much better I feel, mentally and emotionally. Like, within a week. I've been dealing with Bipolar since I was 12, and this is the best I've felt in years, even with my medications. Much, MUCH less depression, less anxiety, and my thinking is a lot clearer. I feel a lot less overwhelm, too, which means I can do the things that get me to the help I need in the first place.
I'm grateful there's an immediate feedback loop, too. If I eat junk food, I feel like **** the next day, physically, mentally and emotionally. It is always, always, a more painful, brain-fog kinda day. I'd never even realized how much my diet was contributing to pain and depression. So now, I don't feel like "I'm on a diet, I can't eat that, omg, I have to lose weight". That feels really overwhelming to me. It's more "Um, yeah, that piece of cake is gonna make tomorrow suuuck. But these grapes won't".
And it wasn't like I was eating super bad before. I was cooking meals, only occassionally eating fast food, and would go weeks without eating something sugary. But I wasn't eating a complete diet of healthy foods, mindfully making sure I was getting the foods this article recommends. And I always blew off recommendations like this, thinking "Meh, food is food, it can't make that much difference".
Well, I'm here to tell you, from my (anecdotal) experience, it does make a difference. It helps, and it definitely doesn't hurt to try it, along with any other help you're getting.
