5.1 Global learning

Activity 4 What is Global Learning?

Timing: Allow approximately 15 minutes for this activity

Global Learning (Northern Ireland schools) define the aims of Global learning as

‘…increasing awareness and understanding of the rapidly changing, interdependent and unequal world in which we live. Through experiential and active learning, students are encouraged to engage critically with global justice issues, while developing the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to participate actively in their own development and in the development of local and global communities.’

Comment

Global Learning is a way of working practically with hope. As the video explains, it aims to prepare children and young people to engage confidently with life’s inevitable challenges, explore global issues from different perspectives, and understand how global concerns connect with their lives. It argues for active and empowering educational approaches that encourage solidarity with others – something you have seen in the activism of the Glasgow Girls. This aligns with the aims of Peace in the World as children learn to negotiate a complex society, developing as critically thoughtful, actively engaged citizens.

Global Learning has gained increasing momentum in recent years and is now linked to educational work in all four nations of the United Kingdom. You can find links to websites that offer further information and resources on the Resources and recommendations page page of this course.
