Session 2: Enhancing vocabulary, grammar, and cultural insights with OMT

Introduction

Online machine translation (OMT) can help you understand more about the language you are learning. This session will focus on how you can use OMT as an individualised learning resource in reading, listening and vocabulary acquisition. As a language teacher, you can use the suggested activities to support your students’ learning.

By the end of Session 2, you should be able to:

  • appreciate how to expand your vocabulary in your target language using OMT
  • identify and understand grammatical features of different languages with the help of OMT
  • recognise the meaning-making power of grammatical features
  • practise close reading and translation skills using OMT.

This session will consist of a series of activities which will allow you to practise using OMT. Activities will be available in French, German and Spanish so you can complete the activity that is appropriate for your learning. Remember, reflection [Tip: hold Ctrl and click a link to open it in a new tab. (Hide tip)] is an important part of learning. You can enhance your learning power by reflecting on the outcomes of different OMT. You can focus on the similarities and differences between your knowledge and the outcome of OMT, the differences between English and the target language, or between other different languages.

Further learning

The activities in this session are designed to be models and inspiration for your own use of machine translation tools in your learning or teaching. Try to find your own examples and new exercises, and don’t be shy to play around with the many possibilities and functions machine translation tools offer to create your own learning support.
